Today in my message on the sovereignty of God, I told the story of Elisabeth Elliot. We heard from her own voice, from her voice of experience and suffering, that “Suffering is never for nothing.”
Today on the campus of Wheaton College, a memorial service will be held for Elisabeth. Here are links to help you connect with the live link: Via Wheaton College (most direct link) or Via ElisabethElliot.org
She was truly a woman who knew practically the sovereign hand of God!
During my final evening at the National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) Convention in Nashville last night, I had the privilege of witnessing how this association of media ministries honors some of its faithful members. About a dozen faithful servants of Jesus Christ were honored for over 50 years in media ministry. It was an impressive group.
It reminded me that in our constant rush to find new ways to reach the next generation we often overlook faithful servants who impacted their generation – the generation before us. Some of those honored were cutting edge pioneers of media ministry in their day. All had a heart to see the Gospel spread over the airwaves in their local area or even around the globe. Many were behind the scenes engineers and producers. Some served as missionaries for half a century.
Those honored this week at the NRB Convention are a part of the “great cloud of witnesses” mentioned in Hebrews 12:1-2. They are men and women of faith who have gone before us.
That cloud of witnesses motivates those of us who serve Christ now “to throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles and run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” All the while we engage in “fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.”
I left the NRB Convention reminded of that great cloud of witnesses in the generations before us! They fixed their eyes on Jesus! So should we! I want to be a part of the faithful cloud of witnesses to the generation behind me!
