It’s not a religion.  Choosing Jesus is not choosing a religion.  You are invited to choose a PERSON… Jesus Christ, the Son of God, who loves you and gave himself for you.

The most common religious thought in the world goes something like this:  Do good, and if at the end of your life your good outweighs your bad God might let you into heaven.  But how good do you have to be?  How is the good and bad measured?   How is the decision made?

The bad news is, no amount of good that we do can make us holy, like God, and fit for heaven.  The good news is, heaven is not dependent on our goodness.  Heaven will be the reward for Christ’s perfection and we get to live there forever if we but believe on Him and receive Him as our personal savior.

Here’s how the Bible explains it:

Our problem is sin.  We were born with it and each of us have done wrong.  In the Bible, Romans 3:23 says that ALL have sinned.  There are no exceptions.  Some might sin more often than others or perhaps in more evil ways… but it doesn’t matter.  All have sinned and fallen short of God’s requirement for heaven.

So what are the consequences?   Romans 6:23 declares that the wages of sin is death.  This death is spiritual and is defined as eternal separation from God.

Our sin is a big problem that we can’t fix.  But we enjoy the love of a holy God who took action.

John 3:16 is the best loved and most known verse in the Bible because it states so clearly how God solved our problem.  We could not care for our sin, but God could and did.  He sent His son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins–pay the penalty for our sins– so that whoever believes on Him can have their sins forgiven and a place in heaven forever assured.

We cannot save ourselves.  But God is not willing for any to perish (2 Peter 3:9).

So a direct and clear invitation is extended to all.  The apostle John said it clearly in John 1:12.  Anyone who will BELIEVE in Jesus and RECEIVE Him immediately becomes a child of God.  This is not hard to understand.

To believe is to give mental ascent, “Yes, God, I believe what the Bible says.  Jesus came to earth, lived a sinless life, died for me on a cross to pay the penalty for my sin, rose for the dead as was promised, and now lives at your right hand interceding for me.”

And to RECEIVE is to make it personal, to tell God, by faith, in prayer, that you are asking Jesus to be your (YOUR) savior. There are no magic words that you can say that will make you a Christian.  It’s not the saying of the words, but the belief in your heart and the honest act of choosing Jesus that changes everything.  A simple prayer like this will be heard by God:

“Dear God, I am coming to you in faith.  I know I am a sinner and cannot save myself.  I truly believe that Jesus died on the cross for me and I thank you for accepting His sacrifice so that my sins can be forgiven.  I give myself to you and ask just now, and forever, that Jesus be my savior and my Lord.  Thank you for loving me just as I am, forgiving me, and offering me a new  life that will last for eternity in heaven.  Please give me wisdom, faith, and determination to live for you in the days ahead.”
